The City of Portsmouth and the McIntyre developer Redgate-Kane are collaborating on the design of a new public gathering place on a portion of the site behind the McIntyre Building, bounded by Penhallow and Bow streets.

The City has asked Portsmouth Listens and the Principle Group, the City’s urban design consultants, to engage local citizens in a visioning process to make this new public gathering place a success for downtown Portsmouth. The question residents will be asked how an expanded public space at the McIntyre Property will make downtown Portsmouth a better place to live, work, and play for everyone.

What use or design features of this public space would make you want to come downtown and enjoy it with friends or visitors? How can it be designed to enhance and complement the best public space we already know; Market Square? We want your ideas and suggestions.

Participants in the visioning process will hear a presentation with visuals about the existing conditions at the site and the many opportunities for improvement. Working in small groups or “study circles” for two nights, they will discuss ideas and explore alternatives. Each group will present their conclusions to the City Council.

*Portsmouth Listens is an all-volunteer group that acts as a neutral convener on issues important to the city’s future.
